Often, traditional western art has focused on trying to capture The Spirit of the West. My vision is that there are many spirits of the west. For me, the Spirits of the West include all of the forces of nature that drew me to art in the first place. Growing up on a farm in western Canada and being the grandson of immigrant homesteaders, I naturally have a very close connection to the land. Being in the wild and experiencing the forces of nature raises up in me memories, feelings, and emotional reactions that, like poetry, connect me to many Spirits of the West. The Calgary Ranch Project and, in particular, visiting the Stampede Ranch near Hanna, has opened for me a well of inspiration. My paintings are not literal representations of western themes; rather, they are visual poems which celebrate the raw beauty, strength, challenge, and opportunity of the Spirits of the West.
