Artist Ranch Project 2011
Joanne MacDonald
Joanne MacDonald is a Calgary based mixed media artist whose focus is on sculpture using almost exclusively recycled materials. Inspired by life and working primarily in metal, Joanne cuts, grinds, assembles and welds raw materials. Through her art she tries to evoke an emotional response using familiar objects composed in an unfamiliar way. Joanne uses found, natural and recycled materials, in different stages of erosion to represent our fragile, temporal nature. These pieces are often constructed in an effort to mirror the beautiful imperfection of life and relationships.
“I found it fascinating getting to know the artists in this rural setting and enjoyed watching the different ways they approached this project and gathered information for their art.”
“I had never really spent much time in the natural landscape South of Calgary and was struck and surprised by its vast beauty. I guess it’s easy to take for granted what is in your own backyard. This experience gave me the opportunity to really be “present” and appreciate that gorgeous environment.”
“The most beautiful time of the day was waking early to watch the horses come back from roaming free. It was magical observing them come out of the trees and saunter through the morning mist to gather in their enclosure.”
