Lisa Brawn
Lisa Brawn's eye-catching woodcut blocks have been bringing wild birds, celebrities, historical figures to life since she was first introduced to the medium by the printmakers at the Alberta College of Art and Design for over 20 years.
She has been experimenting with primarily figurative, portrait genre woodcuts using walnut and cherry wood as well as salvaged century-old rough Douglas fir beams from the restoration of the historic Alberta Block. Rather than making prints from the woodcuts, the blocks themselves become the artwork.
Her contemporary graphic stylizations showcase Alberta wildlife, especially wild birds, as well as iconographic images of Alberta homesteaders, North West Mounted Police and Royal Canadian Mounted Police referenced from the Glenbow Archives.
