CHRISTIE SIMMONS & BRIAN VOLKE
Christie Simmons and Brian Volke have shared the stage for the past five years as part of the high-energy folk/roots/Celtic band Tir Na N’og. With the other members of their band they are frequently seen about Alberta’s pub and folk-club scene filling the airwaves with upbeat east coast, traditional Irish and original music – Brian on lead guitar, vocals and mandolin and Christie on whistles, vocals and guitar. As songwriters and musicians they have drawn on influences as varied as Gillian Welch, Blue Rodeo and Spirit of the West. Their resulting original music is authentic, acoustic folk – western Canadiana that’s woven with strains of Celtic, brushes of bluegrass and old-time prairie sensibility.
Christie’s work as a songwriter reflects her varied musical past – years of playing bagpipes on the highland games circuit, flute, recorders, crumhorns and other renaissance instruments through university – and always guitar. Her work as a songwriter speaks to her interest in literary arts and her deep respect for the power and colour of language and she delivers them in a voice many consider to be her finest gift. Winnie’s Song, her release of 2010, is described as evocative and richly-coloured, elegant acoustic folk.
Brian hails from Regina, Saskatchewan, where for many years he fronted the roots band known as Celtic Clutter. His musical styles range from mellow and sweet through to boisterous, energetic romps. His songs tell the stories of the people and places he knows, and the pleasures and problems of life. Apart from being a talented singer-songwriter, Brian is a spectacular, high-energy flat-pick guitarist – a skill he liberally applies in his performances.
