Window On The West Performers
Prairie Winds
The Prairie Winds Square Dance Club of Calgary was formed in 2002, by the amalgamation of two smaller clubs, the Richmond Revellers and the Glendale Gadabouts. For one year the two groups were “engaged”, dancing together and enjoying the calling of Revellers’ Dennis Levitt. After that the amalgamation was finalized and Prairie Winds was born. Many of our members have been dancing for 20, 30, 40 or more years. One of our members is now in her 55th year of square dancing; she was one of the founding members of the Gadabouts.
The Prairie Winds were saddened by the loss of their caller Dennis in 2005, when he succumbed to cancer. Fortunately, he had asked his friend Tom Dakers to take over for him, and we were lucky Tom could find the time and the energy, because he soon had 3 groups to call for! Prairie Winds still thinks of Tom as theirs, but we share.
Every year new dancers are taught the moves, from September to April, then are invited to join the club. So some of our members are relatively new, but you can seldom tell, as square dancing is easy to learn and the new dancers fit right in to the group.
Interested persons are invited to check out the Calgary and District square dance web site at www.squaredancecalgary.com, or look for Prairie Winds on Facebook. The next set of lessons will run on Monday evenings at Sunalta Hall on 10 Ave SW, beginning at 7 PM on September 10. The first 3 lessons are free and subsequent evenings are only $4.00/person. This is the finest in inexpensive good fun for couples. If you’re not married, bring a friend! We look forward to seeing you across the square!
