Window On The West Performers
The June Bugs
The June Bugs are five women whose singing voices blend like butter in two, three, four and five part harmonies. From upbeat gospels and saucy bluegrass to traditional folk and contemplative originals, their music reflects a shared passion for the pure, heart-piercing magic of acoustic music and the marvel of well-blended vocal harmonies
Renay Eng-Fisher (upright bass) has been active in the bluegrass music scene in Alberta for many years and has performed in various ensembles with artists such as Bill Keith, Ivan Rosenberg, Jay Buckwold, Gordie Sadler, Dawn and Brad Oviatt and with her husband Steve Fisher. Her strong acoustic bass playing sets the groove for the Bugs while her passion for musical collaboration and creation has helped bring solid originals and unique harmony arrangements to the group.
Sue Anne Borer (auto harp, percussion) lived in England for many years where she performed and recorded traditional English folk music. She loves and has played many genres of music but is most inspired by close harmony singing. Her high, sweet harmonies give the group its ethereal sound and her auto harp and percussion adds texture to the group's unique instrumental blend.
Audrey Guagliano (guitar, mandolin, harmonica) has been bringing her original material to Alberta stages for the last 10 years. While her musical beginnings are rooted in country music, as a performer and songwriter she has more recently turned her attention to bluegrass because of its emphasis on vocal harmony and to folk for its ability to effectively translate emotion. She has a warm, moving voice and her mandolin playing sets a tasteful energetic cadence for the group.
Christie Simmons (guitar, whistles, banjo) comes to the June Bugs having dabbled heartily in musical genres and instruments ranging from classical flute and renaissance recorder to highland bagpipes, choral and bluegrass music. For the past five years she has played whistles, guitar and sung lead and harmony vocals with the high-energy Celtic band Tir Na N’og. Some of the originals songs she brings to the Bugs are recorded on Winnie’s Song, her 2010 release which, says CKUA’s David Ward, is a delightfully rich debut.
Tasha Zboya (fiddle) Tasha Zboya, who has played violin since she was three, comes from a long line of musicians. As a Suzuki teacher, her mother told her she was going to play an instrument so she’d better find one she liked! Her choice has lead her to participation as both performer and instructor with such groups as the Calgary Fiddlers where she was able to travel and perform in Florida, South Korea and the United Kingdom. She brings her tasteful fiddle licks and angelic voice to the Bugs.
